LJS: Candidate, home builders spar over roads funding

By Deena Winter / Lincoln Journal-Star

A Lincoln City Council candidate has accused a home builders group of pushing the idea of making Lincoln property owners pay for improvements — such as street repairs — while building new roads with property tax dollars.

New Radio Ad: "Endorsement"

The campaign released a new radio ad today, based on the Lincoln Journal-Star's endorsement:

LJS Endorses Gene Carroll for the General Election

The Lincoln Journal-Star published their endorsements today:

Eugene W. Carroll, 58, would bring a calm, get-down-to-business demeanor to City Council duties.

As a former basketball referee at the collegiate level, Carroll is accustomed to remaining composed in the face of vitriol. The experience should serve him well in helping to dampen obstructionist partisan warfare at City Hall.

Gene Releases New Radio Ad: "Great Call"

As a referee, Gene has been making great calls for years on basketball courts around the Big XII. Now it's time we put Gene on the City Council to make great calls for Lincoln:

Lincoln Journal Star Endorses Gene Carroll

Dear Friends:

Today the Lincoln Journal Star endorsed my plan to move Lincoln forward by creating new jobs, providing tax relief, revitalizing neighborhood and cutting government waste:

“Eugene W. Carroll, who now chairs the Lincoln-Lancaster Planning Commission, already has amassed working knowledge of one important duties of city government – zoning and land use.

“His experience in that post will help him quickly shoulder the council workload. His record in that post also inspires confidence that he will avoid the political infighting that too often shows up during council meetings.

“The editorial board also finds favor with Carroll’s priorities. His top priority is job creation in the current economic downturn. He also gives high priority to find innovative ways to fund road construction for residential and retail development.”

Gene Carroll Statement on Libraries

Dear friends of the Bethany and South Branch Libraries:

As I drove down 27th Street the other day I saw a line of children entering the South Branch Library and I was so impressed by the eagerness in their step as they entered the building. Libraries are the life blood of our community and at the core of building a bright, well read and educated society. I know also that libraries are not just about books anymore – they provide opportunities for people to take classes, watch movies, look for jobs online and so much more.

I am in strong support of full funding of the Bethany and South Branch Libraries today. I understand that city finances are tight, but it is not in our long term economic interest or our positive progress as a community to even consider closing these two libraries.

Throughout my campaign I have focused on my plan to create jobs, revitalize our neighborhoods and move Lincoln forward. Closing these two libraries is counter to my plans to move Lincoln forward and will actually hurt our economy, our community and our education.

I commend you on your effort to save these two libraries and I am in awe of your organization, your passion and your commitment to our future.

Sincerely,

Eugene Carroll

Friend -

I filed to run for City Council yesterday because I believe Lincoln needs a fresh perspective with a focus on growing and strengthening our community. As an experienced city planner, I believe I have the tools necessary to move our city forward.

But this campaign is about you and the future of Lincoln, and I want to know what you want from your City Council. As a Lincolnite, you should set the agenda for your City Council. Share your priorities for Lincoln here:

Release: Candidate for City Council Gene Carroll Prioritizes Roads

Calls for City to Invest Stimulus Money in Resurfacing and New Roads

LINCOLN, Neb. - Gene Carroll, candidate for one of the three at-large City Council positions today said that if elected he would work hard to make sure the approximately $9 million in federal stimulus money for the city to use on roads was spent on shovel ready projects within the city to create jobs and relieve traffic congestion.

"This federal money provides us with a great opportunity to resurface and expand roads in Lincoln, relieve traffic congestion, create new jobs, enhance old neighborhoods and expand to new ones," said Carroll. Earlier this year Mayor Beutler provided the federal government with a list of shovel ready roads projects that will create jobs, provide much needed resurfacing and expansion into new growth areas of town.

"As the Chair of the Planning Commission I know there is much needed work to be done to many of our arterial streets from all parts of town – widening of "O", resurfacing of A, Sheridan, Holdrege and Van Dorn. We need this money used to resurface and expand these roads and most importantly to get our economy moving again," said Carroll.

The top six finishers in the April primary election advance to the May general election.

Carroll, who chairs the Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission, said he will bring a combination of experience, professionalism, dedication, energy and passion to the City Council.
